The 2.0 diesel of 1, 3 and 5 Series. Infamous for timing chain stretch with the chain at the gearbox side - treat P0016 dead seriously on this engine.

Turbo four-cylinder petrol (320i, 528i, X1, X3). Early years had weak chain guides; high-pressure fuel pumps and coils also act up.

Straight-six diesel (330d, 530d, X5). Strong and durable, but the EGR cooler and DPF need attention with city driving.
