What's wrong with your car?

A harsh, metallic grinding or scraping sound that happens specifically when you press the brake pedal, often worse at low speed.

A high-pitched squeal, usually most noticeable on the first brake application of the day or at low speed.

The steering wheel vibrates or shakes noticeably once you reach highway speed, often getting worse the faster you go.

A pulsing or shaking sensation felt through the steering wheel and sometimes the brake pedal, specifically when braking.

Loud popping or banging sounds from the exhaust, often when letting off the gas or during deceleration, sometimes with a visible flash.

A distinct burning rubber odor, either while driving or after parking, sometimes with light smoke.

A sharp, acrid smell of hot oil, usually from the engine bay, sometimes with light smoke from under the hood.

A distinct sweet, syrupy odor (often compared to maple syrup) coming from the engine bay or vents, usually meaning coolant.

A noticeable gasoline odor either inside the cabin or around the car, especially strong right after fueling or while driving.

A musty, moldy or "wet sock" smell comes from the air vents, especially noticeable right when the AC or heater first turns on.

The temperature gauge climbs into the red zone, or a coolant temperature warning appears on the dashboard.

The air conditioning system runs and blows air, but the air is warm or only mildly cool instead of cold.

The heater is turned to hot but only blows cool or lukewarm air, especially noticeable in cold weather.

A colored puddle (usually green, orange, pink or blue) appears under the car after it has been parked for a while.

The engine RPM rises but the car does not accelerate proportionally, or the transmission seems to hesitate or slip between gears.

The transmission is stuck in one gear and will not shift up or down as it normally would, or refuses to engage a gear at all.

A rising, whining or whirring noise that gets louder or higher-pitched as you accelerate, and quiets down when you let off the gas.

A sharp, burnt smell (often described as a burnt toast or hot metal smell) noticeable after driving, particularly linked to the transmission area.

After shifting from park into drive or reverse, there is a noticeable pause of a second or more before the car actually starts to move.

A steady humming, rumbling or roaring noise that seems to come from one wheel area, changing with vehicle speed and often changing when turning.

The battery is repeatedly found dead or too weak to start the car, even after being recharged or jump-started recently.

The interior lights, dashboard lights or headlights visibly dim or flicker when braking, idling, or using multiple electrical accessories at once.

Several seemingly unrelated electrical issues show up around the same time - for example, a window acting up, a warning light flickering, and the radio glitching.

The headlights appear noticeably dimmer than normal, or flicker on and off slightly, especially noticeable at night or idle.

One headlight fails to turn on at all while the other works normally.

The turn signal indicator blinks noticeably faster than normal, often called "hyper-flashing".

The interior dome light or another cabin light stays on even after all doors are closed and the car is locked, which can drain the battery overnight.

One or more power windows fail to move up or down when the switch is pressed, or move very slowly.

Pressing the horn button produces no sound at all, or only a weak, distorted sound.

Pressing the lock/unlock button on the key fob or interior switch does not lock or unlock all doors together, or does nothing at all.

The remote key fob no longer locks or unlocks the car from a distance, or only works when held very close to the car.

A single window becomes stuck in one position, neither responding to the switch nor moving manually.

A door requires unusual force to open or close properly, or does not latch securely on the first attempt.

The trunk, boot or tailgate does not open using the button, remote or interior release, though it may open with the physical key.

The wipers move normally but leave streaks, smears or missed patches on the windshield instead of clearing it fully.

Moving the wiper stalk or pressing the wiper switch produces no movement from the wiper blades at all, at any speed setting.

Pressing the washer fluid stalk or button produces no spray on the windshield, even though the wipers themselves work.

The inside of the windows or windshield fogs up with condensation, especially in cold or humid weather, or with passengers in the car.

The speedometer reads zero regardless of actual speed, jumps erratically, or shows an obviously incorrect speed.

The fuel gauge stays stuck at one level (often full or empty) regardless of actual fuel level, or fluctuates unpredictably.

Several unrelated dashboard warning lights (for example ABS, battery, power steering and traction control together) all illuminate at the same time.

The clock, radio presets or other saved settings repeatedly reset to default, as if the car had lost power completely.

The car needs noticeably more fuel to cover the same distance as before, without a clear change in driving habits.

The check engine light comes on shortly after refueling, often within a day or two, without any other noticeable symptom.

The fuel pump nozzle repeatedly clicks off as if the tank is full, well before it should be, making it hard to fully refuel.

A single clunk or thud sound is heard from underneath the car specifically when shifting out of park into drive or reverse.

Selecting 4WD or engaging AWD mode fails to actually shift power to the extra wheels, or the indicator light does not confirm engagement.

A vibration appears specifically when accelerating or under load (towing, climbing), but disappears when coasting or maintaining steady speed.

A whining or howling noise coming from the differential (front, rear, or center on AWD cars), changing pitch with vehicle speed.

Small rust spots, bubbles under the paint, or visible corrosion appear on body panels, wheel arches or the underside.

Water gets into the cabin, showing up as a wet carpet, damp seats, or dripping from the headliner, usually noticed after rain or car washing.

Pressing the seat heater button produces no warmth in the seat, or only warms unevenly or intermittently.

The central infotainment or radio touchscreen is frozen, unresponsive, or displays nothing at all, even though the car otherwise runs normally.

A full charge takes you noticeably less distance than it used to, or estimated range drops faster than actual miles driven.

Plugging in the charging cable does not start charging, or charging stops shortly after starting without reaching the expected level.

The regenerative braking effect (the car slowing down when you lift off the accelerator) feels noticeably weaker, stronger or inconsistent compared to normal.

The normal diesel engine clatter or knock, which all diesels have to some degree, has become noticeably louder or has changed character.

A vibration that was expected to be fixed by new tires is still present, or a new vibration appears right after a tire replacement.

One specific tire needs topping up with air noticeably more often than the others, indicating a slow, steady leak.

One or more tires show wear that is uneven across the tread - more worn on one edge, in the center, or in a scalloped/cupped pattern.

A rhythmic vibration or thumping is felt for the first minute or two of driving after the car has been parked for a while (especially overnight or in cold weather), then smooths out.
