Fuel gauge is stuck or reads inaccurately

Informational, low priority

fuel gauge stuck on full or empty · fuel gauge wrong reading

Symptom description

The fuel gauge stays stuck at one level (often full or empty) regardless of actual fuel level, or fluctuates unpredictably.

Common causes

  • A failing fuel level sending unit inside the fuel tank
  • A wiring fault between the sending unit and the instrument cluster
  • A fault within the instrument cluster itself

What to check

Track your actual fuel level by trip odometer and known tank size for a few fill-ups as a temporary workaround while this is diagnosed.

Can you keep driving?

Safe to drive, but be cautious about running out of fuel unexpectedly - do not rely on the gauge until it is fixed.
