Wipers leave streaks and do not clear the windshield well

Informational, low priority

streaky wipers · wipers skip and smear

Symptom description

The wipers move normally but leave streaks, smears or missed patches on the windshield instead of clearing it fully.

Common causes

  • Worn or cracked wiper blade rubber (the most common cause)
  • Dirt or grime built up on the blade edge
  • A bent wiper arm not applying even pressure across the glass

What to check

Run a finger along the wiper blade edge - if it feels rough, cracked or uneven rather than smooth rubber, that confirms it needs replacing.

Can you keep driving?

Safe to drive, but replace the blades soon, especially before heavy rain - poor visibility in wet weather is a real safety risk.
