Airbag / SRS Warning Light

Red - stop right away

SRS light · flashing airbag light · supplemental restraint system light

What it means

The supplemental restraint system (airbags and seatbelt pretensioners) has detected a fault. The airbags may not deploy correctly in a crash, or could deploy unexpectedly.

Common causes

  • Faulty seat occupancy sensor
  • Corroded or disconnected wiring under a seat or in the steering column
  • Aftermarket seat covers interfering with sensors
  • Previous crash repair that did not reset the system properly
  • Failing airbag control module

What to do

Have the SRS system scanned for codes by a shop with the right diagnostic tools - this is a safety system and worth prioritizing even though the car drives normally otherwise.

Can you keep driving?

Yes, the car drives normally, but the safety system may not protect you in a crash the way it should. Do not ignore this for long, and never disconnect or tamper with airbag wiring yourself.
