DEF Warning Light (Diesel Exhaust Fluid)

Amber - needs attention

AdBlue warning light · diesel exhaust fluid low light

What it means

The diesel exhaust fluid (DEF, also branded AdBlue) used to reduce emissions in modern diesel engines is running low.

Common causes

  • DEF tank naturally running low with normal use
  • DEF quality sensor detecting contaminated or diluted fluid
  • Faulty DEF level sensor
  • DEF heater or pump fault in cold climates

What to do

Top up the DEF tank (available at most auto parts stores and fuel stations) as soon as convenient. Do not ignore this - many diesels are programmed to limit engine power or refuse to restart once DEF is fully empty.

Can you keep driving?

Yes initially, but the countdown is real. Some vehicles will enter a reduced-power limp mode and eventually will not restart once DEF runs out completely, by design under emissions regulations.
