Check Engine Light

Amber - needs attention

engine warning light · malfunction indicator lamp · MIL

What it means

The engine control unit has detected a fault somewhere in the engine, transmission, or emissions system and stored a trouble code (a "P" code) explaining what went wrong.

Common causes

  • Loose or faulty fuel cap
  • Worn spark plugs or ignition coils
  • Failing oxygen sensor
  • Catalytic converter problem
  • Vacuum leak or dirty mass airflow sensor

What to do

Get the code read with an OBD-II scanner (many auto parts stores do this free) or book a diagnostic at a workshop, then look up the exact code in our OBD-II library.

Can you keep driving?

A steady light usually means you can drive carefully and get it checked soon. A flashing light means an active misfire is dumping raw fuel into the catalytic converter - stop driving and get it towed if possible.

Run a shop? The OBD decoder, fuse box diagrams and parts catalog are built into the Motoro dashboard. See Motoro for workshops

Descriptions are for guidance only and do not replace a workshop inspection. If you are ever unsure whether it is safe to keep driving, pull over in a safe spot.
