Car starts then immediately dies

Serious - act right away

engine starts and stalls right away · fires up then shuts off

Symptom description

The engine starts up successfully but stalls again within a second or two, before you can even give it gas.

Common causes

  • A vacuum leak preventing the engine from maintaining idle
  • A failing idle air control valve
  • Low fuel pressure right after startup
  • A faulty crankshaft or camshaft position sensor

What to check

Try starting it again while gently pressing the gas pedal - if it stays running that way, it points toward an idle control issue.

Can you keep driving?

The car cannot be driven if it will not stay running. Repeated cranking attempts can drain the battery, so if it fails a few times, stop and get it inspected.
