Car won't start - completely silent, no sound at all

Serious - act right away

dashboard lights dead · nothing happens when I turn the key

Symptom description

Turning the key or pressing the start button produces absolutely no sound and no dashboard lights - total electrical silence.

Common causes

  • Completely dead battery or a disconnected terminal
  • Blown main fuse
  • Faulty ignition switch
  • Immobilizer/security system fault preventing the electrical circuit from closing

What to check

Check whether the interior dome light or any dashboard light comes on at all - if absolutely nothing lights up, suspect the battery or its connections first.

Can you keep driving?

The car cannot be driven in this state - a workshop or roadside assistance visit is needed to diagnose which of the above it is.
