Car won't start - just clicking

Serious - act right away

clicking when turning key · engine clicks but does not crank

Symptom description

Turning the key or pressing start produces one or more rapid clicking sounds, but the engine does not crank over.

Common causes

  • Weak or dead battery (the most common cause by far)
  • Corroded or loose battery terminals
  • Faulty starter solenoid
  • Bad starter motor

What to check

Check the battery terminals for corrosion (white/blue crust) and make sure they are tight - this alone fixes a large share of clicking no-starts.

Can you keep driving?

The car will not start, so this is moot - but if jump-started, get the battery/charging system tested before relying on it again.
