Engine runs rough only after it warms up

Needs attention soon

runs fine cold but rough when hot · rough running at operating temperature

Symptom description

The engine runs smoothly when cold but develops a rough idle, hesitation or misfire once it reaches normal operating temperature.

Common causes

  • A vacuum leak that only opens up as engine parts expand with heat
  • A failing ignition coil that breaks down under heat
  • A heat-sensitive crankshaft or camshaft position sensor

What to check

Note how long it takes (in minutes of driving) before the rough running starts - this helps a mechanic reproduce the fault during diagnosis.

Can you keep driving?

Usually safe short-term, but get it looked at - heat-triggered faults tend to be intermittent and harder to diagnose the longer they are left.
