Rough or shaky idle

Needs attention soon

engine shakes at stoplight · rough idling engine

Symptom description

The engine feels rough, shaky or uneven while sitting still (in park or at a stoplight), as opposed to running smoothly.

Common causes

  • A vacuum leak in a hose or intake gasket
  • Dirty or failing fuel injectors
  • Worn or fouled spark plugs
  • A dirty throttle body or idle air control valve

What to check

Note if the check engine light is also on - if so, a code scan will usually point directly at the cause (commonly a lean-mixture or misfire code).

Can you keep driving?

Usually safe to drive short-term, but a rough idle wastes fuel and can worsen into stalling, so get it looked at within a couple of weeks.
