Squealing noise right after starting the engine

Needs attention soon

belt squeal on cold start · squeal when starting car

Symptom description

A high-pitched squeal that happens right when the engine starts, especially on a cold morning, and often fades after a few seconds.

Common causes

  • A worn, glazed or loose serpentine/drive belt
  • A failing belt tensioner
  • A seizing accessory pulley (alternator, AC compressor or power steering pump)

What to check

Visually inspect the drive belt for cracks, glazing (shiny surface) or looseness - this is a quick, no-tools visual check.

Can you keep driving?

Usually safe short-term, but a belt that fails completely can knock out the alternator, power steering and sometimes the water pump all at once.
