Knocking noise from the engine

Serious - act right away

engine knock · metallic knocking sound engine

Symptom description

A rhythmic, metallic knocking or tapping sound coming from the engine, often changing pace with engine speed.

Common causes

  • Low engine oil pressure or oil starvation (a serious cause)
  • Worn rod or main bearings
  • Using fuel with too low an octane rating for the engine (can cause a lighter "pinging" knock)
  • A failing timing chain or tensioner in some engines

What to check

Check the oil level and oil pressure warning light immediately - if the oil light is also on, stop the engine as soon as safely possible.

Can you keep driving?

Not recommended, especially if paired with a lit oil pressure warning light. A rod knock in particular can lead to sudden, complete engine failure.
