Transmission won't shift gears

Serious - act right away

stuck in gear · car stuck in one gear

Symptom description

The transmission is stuck in one gear and will not shift up or down as it normally would, or refuses to engage a gear at all.

Common causes

  • Low transmission fluid
  • A failing shift solenoid
  • A faulty transmission control module or speed sensor
  • Internal mechanical transmission damage

What to check

Check the transmission fluid level first if accessible - this is the cheapest possible cause and worth ruling out immediately.

Can you keep driving?

Not recommended. Driving stuck in a single gear can cause overheating and further internal damage, and being stuck unable to select a gear is unsafe in traffic.
