Whining noise when accelerating

Symptom description

A rising, whining or whirring noise that gets louder or higher-pitched as you accelerate, and quiets down when you let off the gas.

Common causes

  • Low power steering fluid or a failing power steering pump (if it changes with steering input too)
  • A worn transmission or differential (especially in manual/older automatic transmissions)
  • A worn wheel bearing (usually more of a hum than a whine, and changes when turning)
  • A failing alternator bearing

What to check

Note whether the pitch changes with engine RPM (points to belt-driven accessories) or with road speed (points to wheel bearing or drivetrain).
