Transmission slipping

Serious - act right away

engine revs but car does not accelerate · gears slip

Symptom description

The engine RPM rises but the car does not accelerate proportionally, or the transmission seems to hesitate or slip between gears.

Common causes

  • Low or degraded transmission fluid
  • Worn clutch packs (automatic transmission)
  • A worn clutch disc (manual transmission)
  • A failing torque converter

What to check

Check the transmission fluid level and condition (color and smell) if the dipstick is accessible on your model - dark, burnt-smelling fluid is a clear warning sign.

Can you keep driving?

Not recommended beyond getting to a workshop. Continuing to drive with a slipping transmission risks turning a repair into a full replacement.
