Catalytic Converter Warning Light

Amber - needs attention

catalyst light · emissions warning light

What it means

This appears as part of the check engine light system when the ECU specifically detects the catalytic converter is not cleaning exhaust gases efficiently.

Common causes

  • Aging or contaminated catalytic converter
  • Failing upstream or downstream oxygen sensor
  • Exhaust leak upstream of the sensor
  • Ongoing engine misfires burning raw fuel through the catalyst

What to do

Have the code read to confirm it points to the catalyst (commonly P0420 or P0430) rather than a different underlying cause like a misfire, which should be fixed first since it can destroy a new catalytic converter too.

Can you keep driving?

Yes short term, but a failing catalytic converter can eventually restrict exhaust flow enough to hurt performance and fuel economy, and replacement is expensive - do not leave it indefinitely.
