Transmission Temperature Warning Light

Red - stop right away

transmission overheating light · gearbox temperature light

What it means

The automatic transmission fluid has overheated beyond its safe operating temperature.

Common causes

  • Low or degraded transmission fluid
  • Towing heavy loads or stop-and-go traffic in hot weather
  • Failing transmission cooler or cooling lines
  • Internal transmission fault causing excess friction

What to do

Pull over safely, shift to neutral or park, and let the engine idle (or turn it off) to allow the transmission to cool. Check the fluid level once safe to do so.

Can you keep driving?

No, not until it cools down. Continuing to drive with an overheating transmission can cause internal damage that turns a fluid top-up into a full transmission rebuild.

Descriptions are for guidance only and do not replace a workshop inspection. If you are ever unsure whether it is safe to keep driving, pull over in a safe spot.
