Brake Fluid Level Warning Light

Red - stop right away

low brake fluid light · brake fluid reservoir light

What it means

A dedicated sensor in the brake fluid reservoir has detected the fluid level dropping below the minimum mark, separate from the general brake system light on some vehicles.

Common causes

  • Worn brake pads causing the caliper pistons to extend further, using more fluid
  • A leak somewhere in the brake lines, calipers, or master cylinder
  • Overdue brake fluid that was never topped up

What to do

Check pad thickness first, since worn pads are the most common and least serious cause. If pads are fine but fluid keeps dropping, inspect for leaks at the calipers, lines, and master cylinder.

Can you keep driving?

Only cautiously to a service point if the brake pedal feels firm and normal. If the pedal feels soft or sinks, stop and do not drive - have the car towed.
