Brake System Warning Light

Red - stop right away

brake warning light · brake fluid light · red brake light

What it means

This red light points to a problem with the braking system itself - most often low brake fluid, but it can also mean a hydraulic fault or uneven brake pressure between circuits.

Common causes

  • Low brake fluid level (often from worn brake pads)
  • Brake fluid leak
  • Worn brake pads triggering a fluid-level sensor
  • Faulty brake pressure sensor
  • Failing master cylinder

What to do

Check the brake fluid reservoir level right away. If it is low, top it up with the correct fluid type and watch for it dropping again (a sign of a leak or worn pads). If the pedal feels soft, spongy, or goes to the floor, treat this as an emergency.

Can you keep driving?

Only to the nearest safe stop if the pedal feels normal and fluid was just slightly low. If the brake pedal feels different in any way, do not drive - have the car towed.
