Brake Pad Wear Warning Light

Amber - needs attention

brake pad light · brake lining wear light

What it means

A wear sensor embedded in the brake pads has made contact with the rotor, signaling that the pads are close to or past their minimum thickness.

Common causes

  • Brake pads worn down to the wear indicator
  • Faulty wear sensor or damaged sensor wire (less common)

What to do

Have the brake pads and rotors inspected and replaced as needed. Squealing or grinding noises alongside this light mean the pads are very worn and rotors may already be damaged.

Can you keep driving?

Yes for a limited time, but do not delay - worn-out pads take longer to stop the car and can damage the rotors, turning a pad replacement into a more expensive rotor job too.
